What to talk to Doctors?

hi folks,

desperately in need of help. i am working as a manager - trg & dev. in a hospital. so far i have trained only the nurses and receptionists. now i have been asked to talk to a group of 150 doctors for about 15 mins. i just dont know what to talk on. HELPPPPP.

How about time management or managing stress ?

i did think about time mgmt. but wud they listen? their schedules get screwed up when there is an emergency etc...?

A couple of things. If you have an audience of 150 doctors for 15 minutes, that amounts to 37.5 doctor hours - or a doctor for the best part of a week.

The first part is to ask why you are being asked to speak and on what topic. Do you have an important message or are you just filling a gap in the programme. This is an important first step in the planning and one that is well covered by John Townsend in his book the Great Presentation Scandal. Go back to the person who asked you to talk and try to get a better brief.

If you are just filling a gap in the programme - then you would be well advised to pull out gracefully.

If you feel you have to press on - ask yourself the question what would they most like to hear in fifteen minutes. You could always phone up a few of them to get some pointers first.

The other topic would be to talk through what training and development services your department can offer them. My advice here would be to keep it short and snappy - certainly under ten minutes.
