Hi,
My nan died early Sunday morning and my sister and I would like to read a poem at her funeral. Please please please can anyone give us some ideas of poems or maybe a website where would be able to look at some. Her name was Kath and she wasnt religious and neither are we so preferably something not too holy. Our nan was always smiling and laughing and will be missed so dearly

Here is a lovely poem

Here's a lovely poem that is perfect for a funeral. I'm not sure of the author, but the words are just beautiful:

'Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.

I have only slipped away into the next room.
Nothing has happened.
Everything remains exactly as it was.
I am I, and you are you,
and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.

Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it ever was.
There is absolute and unbroken continuity.

What is this death but a negligible accident?
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.

All is well.
Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!'

???

It is my nans funeral next week and i am finding it hard what to say, I was with her when she died and the 6 excruiciatingly painfull weeks she suffered from cancer.

My mom chose to care for her 24/7 with help from me and my sister and the fantastic evening service and everyone who works with the terminaly ill, i have the upmost respect for people who gives and provides care to people and they way they do it.

My nan was a Christian and she lived her life by the bible, i have always hoped and thought there was a god and the saviour jesus christ ( I went to a church school so i know the jist as it were).
But what i am trying to say is that i will say what i loved about my nan and what i cherichs most about her, but i am finding it hard to know how to relate it to her faith and the faith i WANT to believe in. HELP!!

Here are two poems which you might like

Letting Go
Leonie Turnbull

Do not grieve for me my darlings, as I drift towards God'd light,
For I am finally at peace, now, for His angels are in sight.
Such serenity surrounds me, now, as they reach to grasp my hand,
Guiding me through Heaven, where new life has now begun.

Do not cry for me my children as I live within God's care,
Finally at peace, now, blessed with beauty everywhere.
I will live within His paradise though my spirit will roam free,
My heart will beat within you all, your love remains with me.

When I still had the gift of life, a beat within my heart,
So terrified of letting go, though I knew we had to part.
As I gazed down upon you all, your tears I saw you cry,
Hearing as you whispered,'twas time to say goodbye'.

I watched you at my funeral, so overwhelming was your pain,
I dried your tears in silence, as you stood there in the rain.
I witnessed as you held each other , surrounded by a gentle mist,
You couldn't feel me wipe your tears, upon which I placed a kiss.

I will watch over you all, until your time will ultimately come,
Live honest truthful lives, until our hearts shall beat as one.
Be patient, show compassion, help to ease somebodies pain,
Be content, love eachother, until I am able to hold you again.

TOMORROW
Author unknown

When tomorrow starts without me, and I'm not there to see
If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me,
I wish so much you wouldn't cry the way you did today
While thinking of the many things we didn't get to say.

I know how much you love me, as much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me, I know you'll miss me too.
But when tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand
That an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand,
And said my place was ready in heaven far above
And that I'd have to leave behind all those I dearly love.

But when I walked through heaven's gates, I felt so much at home
When God looked down and smiled at me from his great golden throne.
He said "This is eternity and all I've promised you"
Today, for life on earth is past, but here it starts anew.

I promise no tomorrow, for today will always last,
And since each day's the same way, there's no longing for the past.
So when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart,
for every time you think of me, I'm right here in your heart.

Poems

Hey guyz, jst thought I'd add some of My Favourite poeoms as whn my nan died of cancer, a couple of weeks ago, it took me forever trawling the web to find the perfect poem and in the end although I loved them all - I wrote my own poem as I found it more personal. Anywayz I said I would post both my favourite poems and the one I wrote myself - as now I am done with it and hope it may be of use to you:-

1. Tear Drops

They say memories are golden,
Well, maybe that is true;
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.

A million times I needed you,
A million times I cried;
If love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still;
In my heart you hold a piece
No one could ever fill.

But now I know you want me
To mourn for you no more,
To remember the happy times
That Life still has in store.

Since you'll never be forgotten
I pledge to you today;
A hallowed place within my heart
Is where you'll always stay.

If tears could build a stairway
And heartache make a lane;
I'd walk the path to heaven
And bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same;
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

2. Tomorrow

When tomorrow starts without me, and I am not here to see,
If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me,
I know how much you love me as much as I love you,
And each time you think of me I know you'll miss me too.
But when tomorrow starts without me please try to understand,
That angels came and called my name and took me by the hand.
They said my place is ready in heaven far above,
And that I have to leave behind all those I dearly love.
But as I turned to walk away a tear fell from my eye,
For all my life I'd always thought it wasn't my time to die.
I had so much to live for and so much yet to do,
It seems almost impossible that I was leaving you.
I thought of all the yesterdays the good ones and the bad,
I thought of all the love we shared and all the fun we had.
If I could have stayed for just a little while,
I'd say goodbye and kiss you and maybe see you smile.
But then I fully realise that this could never be,
For emptiness and memories would take the place of me.
And when I thought of worldly things that I'd miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you and when I did my heart was filled with sorrow.
But when I walked through Heaven's gate I felt so much at home,
As God looked down and smiled at me from his great golden throne.
He said "This is eternity, And all I've promised you,
Today your life on earth is past, but here it starts anew."
"I promise no tomorrow but today will always last,
And since each day's the same here there's no longing for the past."
So when tomorrow starts without me don't think we're far apart,
For every time you think of me I'm right here in your heart.

3. Letting go
Do not grieve for me my darlings, as I drift towards God'd light,
For I am finally at peace, now, for His angels are in sight.
Such serenity surrounds me, now, as they reach to grasp my hand,
Guiding me through Heaven, where new life has now begun.

Do not cry for me my children as I live within God's care,

I will live within His paradise though my spirit will roam free,
My heart will beat within you all, your love remains with me.

When I still had the gift of life, a beat within my heart,
So terrified of letting go, though I knew we had to part.
As I gazed down upon you all, your tears I saw you cry,
Hearing as you whispered,'twas time to say goodbye'.

Live honest truthful lives, until our hearts shall beat as one.
Be patient, show compassion, help to ease somebodies pain,
Be content, love eachother, until I am able to hold you again.

4. God's Garden

God looked around his garden And He found an empty place. And then He looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you, And lifted you to rest. God's garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids, And whispered"Peace be thine." It broke our hearts to lose you. But you didn't go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home.

5. Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a 1,000 winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sun on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled light
I am the soft star that shines at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there; I did not die.

6. My Very Own Poem I wrote For My Nan (My Heart Is Breaking)

Words cannot express,
What you mean to me,
And now's your opportunity,
Your chance to be free

Nothing I can say,
Will stop or heal the pain,
Nothing I can do,
Will make you be the same

I want to hug and hold you,
And tell you, you'll be okay,
But I know this journey's a long one,
And one you can't make with me

You'll never be alone nan,
I hope that you can see,
Although your oh so far away,
Your always here with me

I won't believe your gone,
I won't accept it to be true,
I won't believe there is a future,
That does not include you

All of the things I never had a chance to tell you,
All of the things you never had a chance to see,
The only thing that remains,
Is the memories of you and me

I need you here with me,
To guide me the right way,
To protect me and to shelter me,
To know you'll be okay

I hope that you are watching,
I hope that you can see,
Each day I will do something,
To make you proud of me

Even in weakness,
Your strength did prevail,
I learnt what family really is,
And that love can never fail

I know you fought so hard,
And gave all you had to give,
But the hardest part is knowing,
You are gone and I have to live

I love you so much nan,
I hope that you knew,
Until my heart stops beating,
I'll love and cherish you

Although they say your gone,
You never did leave me,
Because in my memory you are the same,
And will live for eternity

Death is but a moment in time,
My mother has told me,
If that is so,
Then why will the pain never cease to be

Nan, it hurts so much,
To know it won't be the same,
I don't care what I've been told,
Time can't heal the pain

I love you, my dearest nan,
But now the end is nigh,
So although my heart is breaking,
I'll have to say goodbye

I hope this is of help and will save you valuable time when searching for the righ poem because I know how hard it is to concentrate when someone that close to you has passed on.
Love Tasha

hey

hey sorry to hear about your nan

this is a couple of years late but if you ever need it... my nan died when i was 14 and i read this at her funeral:

You look so peaceful lying there
With your hands folded upon your chest.
You look like you are sleeping
But you are at eternal rest.
So Long For Now.

Not a hair out of place,
Your make-up nicely done,
A beautiful smile upon your lips -
For now you are with Your Son,
When someone special passes on
It does not mean they are gone,
Though they are no longer with us
Their memory still lives on.
It hurts so much to lose a friend -
Especially one that is trustworthy and kind.
Nanna you were that special friend,
A rare and special find.
Nanna, you will always be with me
In spirit and in mind.
You will always have a special place in my heart
Forever until the end of time.
Nanna, I will not say "Good-bye".
This is not the end.
So I will just say, "So long..."
Until we meet again.
