poem for my grandads funeral

hiya, my grandad died on friday from cancer and i want to say a poem at his funeral on friday!i want to say something nice as he was like a dad to me!if any1can help it would be appreciated thanx

One of my favourite poems is
I Did Not Die

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle Autumn's rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush.
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there;
I did not die.

Hi I have been asked to read something at my grandpa's funeral and he's not even dead yet- he's got terminal cancer and is very very weak. It's really upsetting reading all of these poems- i would like to write something myself about him but i don't know where to start. could anyone help me?

that poem

I have to read out a poem at my grandads funeral as he died from cancer a few days ago... I have seen that poem "I did not die" and quite fancy that one.. Please could I have Your views about it!...x

hi, my grandad died not so long back, all i can say is say what you think and remember a poem doesn't have to rhyme!

My local undertaker gave me a copy of the following for my father in laws funeral this week. It could be adapted though the rhythm in the last line may be a slight problem.

Our Father kept a garden.
A garden of the heart;
He planted all the good things,
That gave our lives their start.
He turned us to the sunshine,
And encouraged us to dream:
Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem.
And when the winds and rain came,
He protected us enough;
But not too much because she knew
We would stand up strong and tough.
His constant good example,
Always taught us right from wrong;
Markers for our pathway that will last
a lifetime long.
We are our Fathers garden,
We are his legacy.
Thank you Dad we love you.

Great Grandad Tom

My Grandad died a couple of weeks ago, he was my hero and I still can't believe he's gone. I wrote a poem for him on behalf of my daughter which I read out at his funeral:

Great Grandad Tom

My Nanny rang at ten past seven,
To tell my Daddy, that you'd gone to heaven.
To play with Josh, and Luke and Jake,
Take them for a walk, by a beautiful lake.

But there were tears in Daddy's eyes,
As he remembered you, as you were in life.
He told me of the time, when he came round with Mummy,
How you wiped a tear, when he said I was in her tummy.

He told me how proud, he was to see me,
Sit for the first time, upon your knee.
How your wonderful smile, would light up the room,
When I came around, on Friday afternoons.

There's no-one like you,
There will never be another.
I'm sorry that you'll not meet, my new sister or brother.

I'm so happy I knew you.
But now I'm sad that you're gone.
My dearest, sweet, Great-Granddad Tom.

my grandad died not so long ago this is what i read at the funeral;
It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you didn't go alone,
Apart of us went with you,
The day god tok you home.

A million times we missed you,
A million times we cried,
If love could havesaved you,
You never would have died.

To the grave we travel,
The flowers are placed with care,
No-one knows the heartache,
As we turn to leave you there.

If tears could build a starway,
And heartaches could make a lane,
We would walk a path to heaven,
And bring you back again.

New Poem For Your Granddad

Just written this. Hope it helps.

Granddad, you were just a lad,
So many years ago.
You had your loves and had your dreams,
You watched us come and go.

You watched us make the same mistakes,
That you had made before,
But that just made you hold us tight,
And love us all the more.

We haven't always thought about
The things that you have seen.
To us you've just been 'Granddad',
No thought of who you've been.

But we remember now in love,
Your life from start to end,
And we're just glad we knew you,
As 'Granddad', and as 'friend'.

My grandad died a couple of days ago 13th september
i want to read a poem but nobody believe i can.
i have always loved my grandad he was like a dad to me and it came much of a shock and now i cry most nights.

Say what you think

There is nothing more appealing than a few words from the heart - keep it simple like...............I really loved my grandad to be around, he never tired of talking to me (us) and he was very wise. He brushed aside my (our) troubles wih a hug and a kiss on the forehead.
I am not sad because he would not have liked this. He has left me with the need to be good to other people - whilst they are still around.
I will never ever forget him.

My grandad

My Grandad

Im gonna say this at his funeral:

There will always be the vivid image of my Grandad with his socks and sandals, the hat that never came off his head and his liquorice stick filled pockets.
He always had a smile on his face and made me laugh. He liked talking to anyone who went past. Everyone who knew him would be touched in 1 way or another.
My grandad was a good dad, husband, brother uncle and grandfather. My grandad will suffer no longer. I know this is hard but it will make us all stronger.

I hope this helps lots of people come up with similar poems.

My Grandad

My great-grandad died last Friday (19th October 2007) and his funeral is this Friday coming. He was my best friend and no one could replace him. I am only 12 but i watched he die in the hospital bed and kissed his forehead when he had gone.
I wrote a poem that I am hoping to read at his funeral.

I miss you
I miss you so bad.
I don't forget you,
oh its so sad.
I hope you can hear me.
i remeber it clreart.

Grandad Poems

Hi there,

I lost my Grandad a couple of days ago after not seeing him for 2 years as i live overseas. I would very much like to send something to my parents for them to read on my behalf and i was wondering if anyone could think of a suitable poem. I loved him very much and didn;t get a chance to say goodbye so any help would be gratefully received.

Hi Try Somthing Like You Are Always In Out Hearts Although We Are Far Apart Youll Always Be Our Guide No Matter Where We Hide
Well Always Have Your Love Although Your Up Above And Just Carry On Like That I Made That Up Coz My Grandad Died On The 11th Of January 2008 I Know Its Hard But You Have To Try And Carry On Hope It Goes Well

I lost my Grandad last Friday. His funeral is on the 5th of March - and I've been asked to read a poem at his funeral - I don't know if I will start crying half way through that would be terrible.

It wouldn't be terrible. It would just show how much you care.

If you do start crying, just pause for a bit, take a deep breath and then continue from where you were.

All the best.

x x Our Grandad x x

My grandad (& my daughters great grandad) passed away on valentines day and we miss him so much already...... we have put together a poem to read at his funeral on 26th March '09. I found it so difficult to find anything appropriate and i have trawled through the internet for days now. I have ended up taking verses from lots of different poems and writing them down - finally i have ended up with something personal to us and hopefully this can be used for others feeling the same heartache as we are after losing a loved one.

x x Our Grandad x x

It broke our hearts to lose you,
but you never went alone,
for a part of us went with you,
the day god took you home.

A milion times we missed you,
A million times we cried,
If love could have saved you,
you never would have died.

To the grave you travel,
Our flowers placed with care,
No-one knows the heartache,
as we turn to leave you there.

If tears could build a stairway,
and memories could make a lane,
we would walk right up to heaven,
and bring you home again.

We love you Grandad,
sleep well in heaven with the angels.

my Grandad

I recently lost my grandad, and i am saying a poem that one of you wrote. Its truly an inspiration for people like me. Thankyou for writing your poems on here, it has made it much easier for me to choose what to say at his funeral.

It Broke our hearts to lose you,
but you never went alone,
for apart of us went with you,
the day god took you home ....

What a lovely poem xx

I really like this poem , especially for someone who has had a long life.

A traveller ventured forth one day
upon a long and winding road
with faith and trust to lead the way
with strength and will to bear his load

and at a slow but steady pace
in cold of storm, in warmth of sun
he journeyed on from place to place
and gained some value from each one

until at last one quiet night
he climbed a hill's soft rounding crest
and saw afar a single light
that seemed to promise peace and rest.

Then following its glow , he came
upon the house in which it shone.
A voice inside called out his name
and told him he was trully home.

Now all of us must travel ,too.
Like his , our paths wind slowly on
and surely when the course is through
a welcome comfort waits beyond.

May we believe that sweet content
is earned by all of those miles passed
and never doubt each traveller's meant
to reach a loving home at last.

My Grandad

I lost my grandad on 17/03/09, and i want something to give to the vicar to read. He was a real jack the lad, and had a great sense of humour. can anyone recommend somethin that will reflect that ? Dannielle XXXx

I wrote this for my grandad's birthday and am going to read it at his funeral on monday.
"My grandad's so bald,
My grandad's so brave,
Sometimes I see him he needs a good shave!

My grandad's clever,
my grandad's smart,
We liked to call him a grumpy old fart!

My grandad always tells me a very good story,
My grandad, i think he washes in glory.

My grandad, we love him ever so much,
there's something about him, a magic touch!

my grandad's so strong,
my grandad's so tough,
my grandad's taught me so much stuff!

My grandad's life, i'm afraid, has come to an end,
this poem was about my very best friend.

Good night God bless, now it's time to rest as you had your last goodbyes.
We can't belive the time has come for us to say goodbye.

How many time have we herd them say you might not live and thrive,
but how many time have you shown them wrong by being here alive.

We can't belive you wher her 1day and gone the following day,
Why why why was this ok for you to take our GRANDAD away.

Love as always sarah cooper x

Garden-for my grandad

this is wat im gonna say 4 my grandad at his funerel as i think the ones you writ yourself ar the best:

garden- for my grandad.

a new flower,
a new bird,
another step,
a new word.

he's seen them,
he has seen them all,
he was there in summer,
and there in fall.

he make sure it looks beautiful,
it is his pride
he watches us,
and with laughter he cried.

he helped them bloom,
made them colour,
cherished there smiles,
and deffianatly made them fuller.

he did his best,
but he has not stopped,
he will never rest,
until they have fully flowered.

Thank-you grandad
i love you
see-you in a while crocodile!

Beth xx

thank you.

i'll be there

There was no time to say goodbye
But this i ask - please do not cry
Remember me as you think best
The happy time - forget the rest.

Look for me and i'll be there
And you will find me everywhere
In the gentle touch of breeze
That cools the skin or swirls the leaves.

In the scent and colour of flowers
That gave to me such happy hours
On sunny days under sunny skies of blue
Just think of me, i'll be with you.

In winter when there's cloud or mist
The rain will give to you my kiss
As wood smoke lingers in the air
Look for me and i'll be there.

Where seagulls cry above the sea
And surf rolls in so endlessly
Among towering trees that soar above
In all these things that i once loved
Look for me and i'll be there
You'll feel my presence everywhere.

this was read out for my grandad i hope some one can find comfort in this like i did and im sorry for every one's loss x

Grandads funeral poem

my grandad died on monday and i read this out at his funeral... . A wonderful grandad so loving and kind , what beautiful memories you leave behind, sharing and caring always content, loved and respected wherever you went, a happy smile , a heart of gold, you were the best this world could hold. A special grandad so kind and so true, What beautiful memories we have of you R I P Grandad .

got 2 love my grandad
this is a poem that i wrote for my grandad

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me

When tomorrow starts without me and I am not here to see
If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me
I know how much you love me as much as I love you
And each time you think of me I know you'll miss me too.
But when tomorrow starts without me please try to understand
That Jesus came and called my name and took me by the hand.
He said my place is ready in heaven far above
And that I have to leave behind all those I dearly love.
But as I turned to walk away a tear fell from my eye
For all my life I'd always thought it wasn't my time to die.
I had so much to live for and so much yet to do
It seems almost impossible that I was leaving you.,
I thought of all the yesterdays the good ones and the bad
I thought of all the love we shared and all the fun we had.
If I could have stayed for just a little while
I'd say goodbye and kiss you and maybe see you smile.
But then I fully realise that this could never be
For emptiness and memories would take the place of me.
And when I thought of worldly things that I'd miss come tomorrow
I thought of you and when I did my heart was filled with sorrow.
But when I walked through Heaven's gate and felt so much at home
As God looked down and smiled at me from his great golden throne.
He said This is eternity And all I've promised you
Today your life on earth is past but here it starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow but today will always last
And since each day's the same here there's no longing for the past.
So when tomorrow starts without me don't think we're far apart,
For every time you think of me I'm right here in your heart.

My Grandpa,

My grandad sadly died 2 days ago and ive put together a poem some are my own some are from other poems together.

It broke our hearts to leave you
although you never went alone
as a part of us went with you
the day god took you home

words cant describe how much we'll miss you
our lives wont feel complete
and we all cant wait for that day
that day where we will meet

if love could build a staircase
and memories could build a lane
we would march right up to heaven
and bring you home again

but you are now with the angels
the angels in the sky
and to know your watching over us,
it helps me not to cry

I love you always grandpa,
rest in pease.
